It has started to cycle that is about it. The ammonia you are seeing now is just dead residue from the rock. Your ammonia spikes will vary since that is dependant on MANY variables. Size of the tank, how much rock, salanity, temperatures what creatures or "things" were caught inside the rock.

Keep a daily log on your tank. Your tank may or may not peak at a 4 or 5 Ammonia, just remember nitrites will follow.

Even with live rock, your tank will not cycle in a week or even two. Although it speeds things up not that fast. Also remember with salt tanks, cycling is one thing maturing is another so be careful what fish you are adding too soon.

Here is a link on cycling your fish tank:

this is not tough, this is suicide. and highly expensive suicide at that. if you have never kept an aquarium before, and youre asking here how to do it, then you are NOT ready. the only people id reccomend starting like that are those that have immense drive to learn and do extensive research first. you have got to start simple.

also, you havnt mentioned a word about cycling, and if you have no idea what im talking about when i say cycling, then you are even less prepared. start small. it will save lives..

It will depend on the quality of the rock and how long it has spent in the curing chamber, if you obtain good quality rock then the cycling process may only take a week or so and in a few rare cases you will barely detect any ammonia. Still if you intend to keep any corals or invertebrates such as shrimp or crabs then it is a very good idea to leave the tank for a couple of months before you add any.

Angelfish are great to have, and if you get them when they're young you can mix then with plenty of fish such as Molly's and guppies.
Also, Blood Parrot Chichilids are adorable and very colourful!
And sure, you could get snails anytime.

i have a 35 gallon, and in it i have 6 red jewel cichlids (very pretty, and aggressive), and a red tail shark. they get in fights so i wouldn't reccomend a red tail shark for your tank. if you are looking for variety, avoid cichlids, as most will rip each other to shreds. if you awant aggressive, cichlids are for you. also, there is 1 species of piranha that would work. it is called S. Sanchezi, or the Sanchezi piranha. it doesn't do well in schools, and will be perfect for your tank. it doesn't need to be fed live food (it actually isn't reccomended, as goldfish have terrible nutritional value, and are very fatty), store bought frozen/freeze-dried krill work well.

if you want a community, go with some cardinal (or other) tetras, guppies, maybe a male betta (fighting fish, they only fight with others of their own species), and some other live-bearing fish, like platies and swordtails.

good luck with whatever you choose
